| Westside nips Tigers in overtime, 17-14
HOUSTON - The Conroe Tigers had their third victory of the season lined up on a 23-yard field goal by Scott Rice late in the fourth quarter Friday. But the Westside Wolves' special team blocked the kick, then booted one of their own in OT to win the game 17-14.
It's Conroe's first loss of the season, coming at Butler Stadium Friday night.
Conroe's special teams blocked the Westside field goal attempt in the third quarter and eventually tied the game at 14-all the next quarter. Two plays later, lineman Jace Brasher forced a fumble and teammate Jon Estes recovered it, setting up what would have been the game-winning field goal.
In overtime, Conroe had the ball first and appeared to threaten as Antonio Kelly scrambled to the 13 on the first play. But a sack of quarterback Justin Smith took the Tigers out of field goal range and they later turned the ball over on downs.
Westside failed to move the ball on its OT possession, but kicker Jorge Rivas booted the game-winner from 37 yards out.
Conroe opened the game in a big way, getting a 57-yard kickoff return by Damian Johnson, and Kelly did the rest, powering into the end zone from 1 yard out. Rice kicked the PAT and Conroe had a 7-0 lead.
But a kickoff out of bounds gave Westside the ball at its own 35 and quarterback Michael Goodnight rushed three times for 39 yards and tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alonzo Adams in the back corner of the end zone to tie the game.
Westside took a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter thanks to timely runs and accurate passing by Michael Goodnight, but it was teammate Samej Washington who capped the drive with a 2-yard run.
Staying on the ground in the fourth, Conroe's Smith and Kelly chewed up the yardage and the clock, eventually knotting the score on a 13-yard run by Lou Greenwood.
Conroe's next game is against Tomball on Friday.
