| Cougars leave Westside in their dust, 48-20
The Cinco Ranch High School football team broke a 14-14 tie late in the second half and never looked back, scoring 34 straight points to crush Westside 48-20 Saturday night at Reliant Stadium.
With the win, Cinco Ranch improved to 11-1 and will return to Reliant next Saturday, taking on Pearland at 1 p.m. Katy will play Brazoswood at 5 p.m. in the KISD doubleheader.
On Saturday night, Cinco Ranch running backs Garrett Forward and Frankie Lugo combined for 218 yards rushing and five touchdowns on a night when the Cougar passing attack was less than sterling.
Lugo hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from J.J. McDermott with 58 seconds left in the second quarter to put Cinco Ranch ahead to stay at 21-14.
The Cougars took the opening kickoff of the thir quarter and went 51 yards in 11 plays, capped by Lugo’s one-yard touchdown plunge to push the lead to 28-14 with 6:48 to play in the third quarter.
After a miserable start to the game, Westside changed its modus operandi on offense, dinking and dunking its way down the field with short passes born out of a wide-spread offense.
"The halftime adjustment we made was to pressure their wide receivers," Cinco Ranch head coach Don Clayton said. "We were giving them 5, 6 9 yards in the first half when we hadn’t seen an offense that spread the whole year. We pushed up on them and took that game away from them."
The Cougars stopped the Wolves on three straight possessions to open the third quarter, the third coming on an interception by safety Yaser Elqutub, who returned the ball 32 yards to the Wolves’ eight-yard line.
Two plays later, Forward scored from a yard out to push the lead to 34-14 with 10:20 left in the fourth quarter.
Westside drove down to the Cinco Ranch nine-yard line on its next possession, but senior safety Matt Harris snuffed out that flame with an interception in the end zone.
It was another huge playoff game for Harris, who returned Westside’s opening punt 41 yards for a touchdown to give Cinco Ranch a 7-0 lead just 1:34 into the game.
After Cinco Ranch missed a field goal, quarterback Westside quarterback Michael Goodnight scored from a yard out to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:59 left in the first half.
Forward’s 19-yard run made it 14-7 Cougars with 4:11 to play in the first half, but Westside fired back with a 54-yard pass from Michael Goodnight to wide receiver Alonzo Adams.
The Cougars added two rushing touchdowns in the final three minutes and Westside threw a touchdown pass on the last play of the game to account for the final score.
