District 20-5A

HISD is as strong in returning talent this year as any in recent memory. HISD returns just as many, if not more, key players as any other district in the state in 2006. The promotion of Westbury up from 4A just further accents the strong talent back in this district.

In addition to the returning talent, HISD could produce a legit threat on the statewide scale in Houston Lamar. The Redskins return a very strong core of varsity experience from last year?s 10-1 team. Eight all-district players return for Lamar. Gifted senior QB Demetrius Woods will lead the offense for the third year in a row. Senior RB Eric Eiland is also back. On defense, DE Chris Howdeshell and junior DB Dion Johnson are among the top returning players. The Redskins are the clear favorites here going in.

Westside also returns a number of key players from a 6-5 team a year ago. The Wolves look to cement their place as one of the top teams in the district on the talent of the returning players who gained valuable experience last year. Junior QB Michael Goodnight gained all-district honors in ?05. One of his primary targets will be senior WR Edward Ewing. Look for senior LB Corey Houston and DB Alonzo Adams among others on defense. The Wolves are also adjusting to a new coaching change.

Madison loses some production, but players like senior RB Corey Taylor and senior DB Loice Means should keep Madison in position to grab a playoff spot. However, holding off Westbury, Chavez and Bellaire won?t be easy. In this decade, it?s been rare to look past the top two teams in HISD but there are three (possibly four) teams after Lamar and Westside with a strong chance of making the playoffs. Chavez returns as much as anyone in the district, and are led by senior QB Aaron Bargas.

Bellaire also return their signal caller Max Flinn in addition to top WR Lee Bryant. Westbury returns one of the top players in the state regardless of position in DE Russell Carter. A potential surprise or darkhorse team to watch is Milby. The Buffaloes went 2-5 in district last year, but return a very strong nucleus of juniors and seniors with varsity experience who could get them into the playoff hunt. However, given the returning talent on the other teams that won?t be an easy feat.
