| Wolves Defeat Nimitz in 1st Round of State Playoffs
Bi-District Champions! The Westside Wolves concluded their bi-district series with the Nimitz Cougars by winning 2 of 3 games to claim the Bi-District Championship. They now have a 27 and 6 season record and will advance on to the Area round in the UIL playoffs to face the Cy-Fair Bobcats later this week. As reported earlier this week, the Wolves won the first game 10 to 0 on Wednesday night and details of the other two games are summarized below.
Nimitz 3 - WHS 2
On Friday night, the Wolves could not overcome a good pitching performance by the big Nimitz righthander plus an incompetent umpire crew led by an inconsistent young umpire behind the plate who would not give Corey Triche the low strike call. Despite these factors, WHS almost pulled out a victory but left the bases loaded in the 1st inning without scoring and gave up a run in the top of the 7th inning that proved to be the difference in this very close game. The WHS offense only had 5 hits for the game and was led by Freddy Villalobos (home run and double) and Brett Zieren with 2 hits each.
The complete Wolves batting order, positions and offensive production in the game were as follows:
1. Ryan Still SS/P - 0 for 2, BB
2. Zach Cohen C - 0 for 3
3. Travis Jackson 1B - 1 for 3
4. Michael Goodnight 3B - 0 for 3
5. Taylor Wall RF - 0 for 2, BB
6. Brian Kovar CF - 0 for 3
7. Freddy Villalobos 2B - 2 for 3, HR, double, RBI, 2 RS (His 2nd HR of the season)
8. Brett Zieren DH - 2 for 3, RBI
(DH for Corey Triche P)
9. Daniel Schmalhausen LF - 0 for 3
The Wolves pitching results for this game were as follows:
Corey Triche (9-1 season record) - 6 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K with 90 PC (52 strikes)
Ryan Still - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB (Int.), 3 K with 16 PC (11 strikes)
WHS 10 - Nimitz 0
On Saturday afternoon, the Wolves came out with more fire and determination than Friday night and pounded 4 different Nimitz pitchers in a six inning (run rule) game. As he did in the first playoff game on Wednesday, Ryan Still led off the game with a home run to give WHS the momentum very early and the Wolves went on to score 3 runs in the 1st inning to seize control of the game. Freddy Villalobos continued his hot batting streak with 3 more singles in this game to pace the Wolves 12 hit attack. With a more consistent umpire behind the plate, Michael Goodnight pounded the strike zone with his fastball and Nimitz could not catch up and managed only 3 hits for the day. Michael Goodnight faced the minimum number of batters (18) as his defense played great behind him as the only 3 Nimitz base runners were erased by (1) caught stealing by Zach Cohen, (2) pick-off at first base by Michael Goodnight, and (3) double play turned by Still and Villalobos.
The complete Wolves batting order, positions and offensive production in the game were as follows:
1. Ryan Still SS - 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, BB, 2 RS
2. Zach Cohen C - 1 for 4, BB, FC, RS (PR)
3. Travis Jackson 1B - 1 for 2, double, Sac. Fly, 2 RBI, ROE, BB, 2 RS
4. Michael Goodnight P - 2 for 4, 2 RBI, FC, RS (PR)
5. Taylor Wall RF - 0 for 3, ROE, BB, RS
6. Brian Kovar LF- 2 for 4, RBI
7. Freddy Villalobos 2B - 3 for 3, RBI, BB, RS
8. Brett Zieren 3B - 0 for 3, BB, RS
9. Daniel Schmalhausen DH - 1 for 2, 2 BB, RS
(DH for Corey Triche CF)
The Wolves pitching results for this game were as follows:
Michael Goodnight (5-2 season record) - 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K with 67 PC (43 strikes)
Area Round of Playoffs
As set forth in an earlier email today, the Wolves will commence the next series on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM back at the Jersey Village HS field. Our opponent will be the Cy-Fair Bobcats and they were rated #5 in the greater Houston area by the Houston Chronicle in the 4-30-07 edition. It will be a tough series and all the WHS students, parents and fans will need to continue their "loud and proud" support of the Wolves.
