| Wolves Win Lufkin's Pete Runnels Tourney
The Westside Wolves won the championship game at the Pete Runnels Tournament, taking a 9-0 win over Bryan. Taylor Wall pitched a complete-game shutout for Bryan, and Cort Nance hit a grand slam.
Wolves 6 - Port Neches Groves 1
The Wolves started the day with an impressive pitching performance, steady defense with only 2 errors and some clutch hitting to secure the win over the 4A Port Neches-Groves Indians (preseason ranked #12 in the state). Ben Theriot (7IP, 1R, 2H, 1BB, 11K plus 6 groundball outs) set the tone early by striking out the side in the 1st inning and was dominant all day while throwing 64 strikes out of 94 total pitches in getting his 2nd win of the season. Offensively, the Wolves were led by Terrence McConn (2 for 2, Sac.Bunt/ROE, 2 RS) and Brian Kovar (1 for 3, double, 2 RBI) who got the Wolves the lead in the 2nd inning with a 2 out, 3-2 count 2 run double to LF driving in McConn and Travis Jackson (1 for 1, 2BB, 2RS). The Wolves got 4 insurance runs in the 6th inning with single from Michael Goodnight (1 for 3, 1RS); Sac.Bunt/ROE by McConn; RBI single from Court Nance (1 for 3, 1RBI, 1RS); BB by Jackson; nice squeeze bunt by Freddy Villalobos (1 for 1, BB, Sac.Bunt, 1RBI) and a closing 2 run single from Ryan Still (1 for 4, 2RBI).
Wolves 11, Henderson 2
The Wolves continued winning ways in Game 2 of the day against 4A Henderson with good relief pitching, good defense plus banging out 12 hits including 3 doubles. Steven Fernandez (1.33 IP, 1R, 2H, 2BB, 1K) started the game and was supported by couple of good defensive plays. One being the pickoff of a runner by catcher Zach Cohen in 1st inning; and in the 2nd inning, after a deep double to CF, a relay throw/play from CF Court Nance to SS Ryan Still to 1B Travis Jackson who was alertly trailing the runner for the out at second base when the runner overran the bag. Fernandez was then relieved by Corey Triche (4.67 IP, 1R, 2H, 3BB, 6K) who later got out of a 4th inning jam with 2 runners on by striking out 2 of the last 3 batters. Offensively, the Wolves had 4 players with two hits each including Ben Theriot (2 for 4, 2RBI, 2RS); Michael Goodnight (2 for 3, Sac. Fly, 2RBI, 2RS); Terrence McConn (2 for 3, Sac. Bunt, 2RBI, 1RS); and Travis Jackson (2 for 3, double, Sac. Fly, 3RBI). All of the other Wolves also contributed to the offense including Ryan Still (1 for 2, double, 1BB, 2HBP, 2RS); Zach Cohen (1 for 3, double, 1HBP, 2RS); Court Nance (1 for 3, 1BB, 1RS); Brian Kovar (1 for 4) and Freddy Villalobos (0 for 3, 1BB, 1RS).
Wolves 9, Bryan 0
Champions!! The Wolves completed their very successful day with a 9 to 0 shutout of the Bryan Vikings in the Championship game. This game also featured good pitching, great defense (no errors) and 12 hits on offense. Taylor Wall (7IP, 0R, 5H, 1BB, 9K plus 5 groundball outs) enjoyed his best control of the season by throwing 61strikes out of 88 total pitches to secure his 4th win of the season. Some great defensive plays included: runner caught stealing by Ben Theirot in the 1st inning; after a 2 out BB in the 3rd inning, CF Court Nance tried for a diving catch of a shallow liner and LF Zach Cohen backed up the play and threw to SS Ryan Still who relayed to C Ben Theriot and the runner was out at the plate; and after a single to RF, a nice double play was turned by Michael Goodnight and Freddy Villalobos in the 5th inning.
The offensive charge was led by Court Nance (2 for 3, home run, double, 5RBI, 1BB, 2RS) who blew open a tight 1 to 0 WHS lead with a grand slam HR to deep RF in the 3rd inning. The other Wolves getting hits included Ryan Still (1 for 5); Ben Theriot (1 for 4); Zach Cohen (2 for 3, 1HBP, 2RS); Michael Goodnight (1 for 3, 1BB, 1RBI, 2RS); Terrence McConn (2 for 4, 3RS); Travis Jackson (0 for 3, Sac. Fly, 1RBI); Brian Kovar (2 for 4); and Freddy Villalobos (1 for 4, 1RBI).
