| Texas City gets whipped by Westside
HOUSTON — Michael Goodnight and the Westside High School football team left the Texas City Stings with bad dreams Saturday night.
Michael Goodnight, the quarterback of the Westside spread offense, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Wolves defeated Texas City 41-13 at Butler Stadium.
Texas City committed four turnovers. That did not include a failed fake punt attempt on which punter Mitch Russo got sacked on his own 11-yard line.
“It was just a tough night,” Texas City coach Tim Finn said. “We got whipped pretty good.”
Texas City (0-2) scored first on Johnny Thomas’ 5-yard run and had the upper hand throughout the first quarter. The Stings forced and recovered two Westside fumbles.
Westside (1-0) took the lead with a 56-yard pass early in the second quarter to grab the momentum for good. The Wolves added to it on the ensuing drive when Thomas fumbled and watched Westside’s Nathaniel Jackson return it 70 yards for a touchdown.
Thomas gave the Stings hope with a 75-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13 early in the second quarter, but the Wolves took over from there.
Westside scored on four of five possessions at one point. The Wolves piled up 444 yards of total offense. Michael Goodnight passed for 197 yards and rushed for 54.
“They executed and kept us off the field. That’s our plan,” Finn said. “We have a lot of youth and inexperience. Hopefully we’ll learn about bringing our ‘A’ game to somebody else’s house.”
Thomas finished with 125 yards on 23 carries, but he was the only offensive threat the Stings boasted. Quarterback Blake Apffel completed two of his first three passes for 45 yards but threw two interceptions. The Stings also lost two fumbles.
With losses to Austin Lake Travis and Westside to begin the season, the Stings have played arguably the county’s most difficult schedule to this point. Lake Travis made the Class 4A Division II playoffs, and Westside made the Class 5A Division I playoffs last year.
Texas City takes on Alvin on Friday night. The Yellowjackets finished last in District 24-5A last year.
“These kids will get better,” Finn said. “They’ll come back Monday and be ready to go.”
