| Westside comes back to take the 35-21 victory
The Elsik Rams faced the Westside Wolves at Butler stadium. Elsik 0-2 came out looking for their first win of the season. The Wolves, who begin district play next week, were 1-1 looking for their second victory. Westside lost their head coach last year to Mayde Creek, giving Mark Byrd the starting job. With a new head coach yet the same system, Coach Byrd and his team came ready to play.
The game got off to a quick start. Early in the first quarter, Rams running back Jeremy Hills connected with quarterback Charles Jones, scoring a rushing touchdown putting Elsik up on the board by seven.
Elsik was fierce and coming on strong, spreading the ball across the field and eating up the turf. A catch by wide out James Washington put the Rams in the red zone for another Rams touchdown 14-0.
The Westside Wolves decided they weren’t going into the half scoreless. Quarterback Michael Goodnight rallied his offense. Thirteen plays for an 80 yard drive resulted in a rushing touchdown by running back Frank Williams with five minutes left in the quarter.
The Wolves were down 14-7, when the Athlete’s Connection spoke with Coach Byrd about the slow start to the first half of the game, “We just had to overcome that and keep Jeremy Hills off the ball.”
In the third quarter the Wolves did just that. Westside came in a vicious pack, after a fumble recovery. Michael Goodnight, who ranks as one of the top quarterbacks in the greater Houston area, came back poised ready to take over. Michael Goodnight scrambled, rushed, and scored a touchdown tying the score 14-14.
Elsik no longer had the lead, nor did they have the momentum. The Wolves defense became a problem that the Rams could no longer handle, they had done exactly what Coach Byrd said they were going to do, they stopped Jeremy Hills.
Wide out Michael Smith scored on Westside's next drive, The Wolves would go on to score 21 points in the third quarter alone. Running back Frank Williams who had three of the Wolves five touchdowns was unstoppable.
Westside would take the win 35-21.
