| Madison outlasts Westside 48-45
Homecoming crowds for both Madison and Westside were treated to an offensive slugfest at Butler Stadium on Friday, with Madison coming away with a 48-45 victory in District 20-5A.
Westside quarterback Michael Goodnight and Madison counterpart Jeffery Lewis led their respective teams up and down the field all night.
Michael Goodnight threw for 345 yards and five touchdowns, while adding a sixth on the ground. Lewis ran for three touchdowns and passed for one in accounting for 250 yards of total offense.
Madison (3-3 overall, 2-1 district) took a 20-17 lead into halftime when backup quarterback Terrance Smith hooked up with Chime Okolie on a 34-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first half.
Smith came in when Lewis was hurt on a 10-yard scoring run with 6:34 left in the half.
Okolie, a senior wide receiver, also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a third-period score, then came up with a deflected pass in the end zone to give Madison a 41-31 lead with 4:52 remaining in the game.
Westside (3-3, 2-1) was never out of contention with Michael Goodnight on the field. The senior quarterback had touchdown passes of 5, 10, 15, 25 and 73 yards.
Lead and momentum changes were frequent throughout the game. After Denzil Bell gave Madison a 27-17 lead with a 3-yard run early in the third period, Westside charged back with two scoring passes from Michael Goodnight.
Westside's 31-27 lead proved fleeting, with Okolie's kickoff return following the second score putting the Marlins ahead to stay.
After Michael Goodnight hit Brandon Marbley to make it 48-45 with 37 seconds remaining, Westside tried an onside kick, but it failed to travel the required 10 yards, allowing the Marlins to run out the clock.
