District 20-5A Preview -- Week 6

Madison wants to pull off the upset against Westside, but the task will be challenging as the Wolves are coming off a big offensive showing against Westbury.

Westside (No. 19 in TPI 5A rankings) at Madison (No. 52): The Wolves are still on a path toward the Oct. 27 showdown against Lamar that will likely decide the 20-5A title, but they can’t look past the Marlins. Westside’s offense is coming off a 49-point, 482-yard outing against Westbury and QB Michael Goodnight is in top form. The Marlins held off a determined Bellaire squad last week and will be hard-pressed to keep pace with the Wolves, especially if Westside picks up where it lefts off. Westside 37, Madison 18.

Lamar (No. 9) at Westbury (No. 49): Don’t look now, but the Redskins’ offense is starting to really turn up the volume. Lamar’s three-headed ground attack of backs Jeremy Craft, Kalvin Guyton and QB Alvin “Stick” Johnson will get their match in the form of Rebel RB Charles Sims and QB Andre Oliver, who more than held their own in last week’s loss to Westside. This is one game the Redskins can’t overlook; don’t expect them to, either. Lamar 34, Westbury 14.

Chavez (No. 37) at Bellaire (No. 55) (Thursday night): Last week’s 66-0 beating of Sam Houston might be the ticket the Lobos’ offense was in need of. Unlike last season, Chavez has relied on the run, and that bodes well for them against a Cardinals team that is suspect in stopping the ground game. Bellaire QB Adrian Nelson can make this interesting with his passing, but Bellaire’s defense won’t be able to hold off the Lobos. Chavez 30, Bellaire 14.

Sam Houston (No. 77) at Milby (No. 76): How strange….not only are the bottom two teams in the area 4A rankings squaring off this week, the two teams on the lower rungs of 5A decide who gets a win this season, with the other all but assured of a winless campaign. The Tigers will have no solution for Buffaloes RB Josh Fields, who could will move very close to the 1,000-yard mark. Entering with 663 yards, it’s not a stretch to think Fields couldn’t crack the mark in one night.

Player of the Week: Westside needed every bit of the 255 yards QB Michael Goodnight accounted for in their 49-33 win over Westbury. The future University of Houston two-sport standout completed 16 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns and ran six times for 34 yards and a fifth score.

One to Watch: Brian Euysthee leads Chavez in rushing, but the Lobo ground game has also received a boost from sophomore RB Mark Cole. Averaging more than seven yards per carry, Cole has run for 306 yards and four touchdowns.

Looking Ahead: Bellaire at Westside, Milby at Chavez, Madison at Lamar, Westbury at Milby.

College Watch: Fields led Milby in tackles the last two seasons, but at 6-0, 225, he just may get a peek or two at running back. His toughness and athleticism would make him a good fit in a one-back set.
