Chavez proves too much for Westside to handle
Chavez used two ball-control drives and a bizarre punt play to secure a 29-21 victory over Westside on Thursday at Barnett Stadium.
The Lobos improved to 5-2 in District 20-5A while dropping the Wolves to 4-3. Both advance to the playoffs, which begin next week.
Ahead 10-7 at the half, Chavez began the third quarter with an 83-yard drive in 13 plays. The series featured nine runs by senior Brian Eurysthee, ending with a 5-yard touchdown. A 78-yard kickoff return by Brandon Marbley gave Westside the ball at the Chavez 12. Quarterback Michael Goodnight completed a pair of passes to Kevin Brooks, the second going for a 5-yard touchdown.
The quick score brought the Wolves within 16-14, but it also put the Westside defense back on the field less than a minute later.
Chavez again went to its ground game, using runs by Eurysthee and Mark Cole to roll 57 yards in 10 plays.
"Our offense is up tempo and we wear down on you," Chavez coach Mike Jackson said. "We don't give you a chance to breath. With these guys, Michael Goodnight is such a good quarterback, you have to keep him off the field."
Chavez controlled the ball in the first half, but did not enjoy as much productivity as it did with Eurysthee and Cole in the backfield. Eurysthee carried 16 times in the second half for 72 yards and two scores.
"Brian had a disciplinary issue and knew he would sit out the first half," Jackson said. "I was very proud with the way he handled himself. The upside of that is that, in the second half, he was going to be fresh and ready to roll."
Chavez increased its lead to 29-14 as time ran out in the third quarter on a play that had everyone scratching their heads.
Westside lined up to punt in the waning seconds and got the snap off with a second left. As the horn blew to end the period, the ball was put on the ground and players froze.
The exception was Mike Brockers of Chavez. With the referees signaling for play to continue, Brockers picked up the ball at the 5 and ran it into the end zone.
"Everyone stopped and they told me to get the ball," Brockers said. "I got the ball and scored. I was very surprised. I didn't know what to do."
Westside moved from its 40 to the Chavez 12 as the fourth quarter opened before failing on fourth down.
The Wolves' defense forced a fumble at the Lobos' 40 to gain another shot. Michael Goodnight made the most of it, throwing his third touchdown of the game with 4:09 remaining.
Westside's defense did its job again, stopping Chavez on a third-down play. The Lobos were also flagged for holding on the play. The Wolves elected to take the penalty and back the Lobos up 10 yards.
Now facing third-and-15, quarterback Andre Kelly passed for a first down that allowed Chavez to run out the clock.
