Hales, Smith best of WR 'Top Ballers'
The ‘Top Ballers’ series is back again to bring you our take on the city’s top players at different positions. Throughout the 2007 football season, I (sports writer A. Vital) witnessed a countless number of good high school wide receivers.
There were so many solid receivers in the area this season that I had to cut the list off. But once again, here are the best of the best. The young men listed below were the team’s go-to guy for the entire season. Remember, these are my top picks from the games I witnessed.
The Top 2 listed here are the most impressive and the others are best of the rest.
Top Baller
DeSean Hales, Klein Oak
Hales is one of those types of players you are likely not to forget once you see him. He could have gone in an all-purpose category for the simple fact that he can play any skilled position on the field. As a receiver, Hales hauled in 42 passes for 722 yards and seven touchdowns.
Hales long ago committed to the University of Texas.
Runner Up
Mike Smith, Westside
Smith is one who went those who went through this season as somewhat of a sleeper, but his numbers were equivalent of some of the bigger-named players at his position. This season, Smith had 74 catches for 1,024 yards and 12 touchdowns.
After the word got out on Smith and he landed a few offers, he chose Connecticut.
Best of the rest
Tyson Williams, Aldine
Williams broke out this year putting up good numbers for the Mustang offense. It Aldine went to the air attack, Williams was likely on the receiving end. He had 56 catches for 779 yards and six touchdowns.
The latest reports show Williams is looking for a college at the Division II level.
Gregory Timmons, Eisenhower
Timmons is one of the best possession wide receivers I have seen in recent years. He has good hands and is definitely a guy you want to have the ball in his hands to move the chains. Timmons had 33 catches for 600 yards and six touchdowns.
He is a big-time recruit you should keep your eye on from the Class of 2009.
Denzel Wells, Cypress Falls
Wells exhibited a great combination of hands and speed this past season as the Golden Eagles’ No. 2 receiver. He had 43 catches for 927 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Wells’ stock rose from his on-the-field performances and now has a couple of offers like Louisiana Tech, Fresno State and Rice to name a few.
Davis Burck, Strake Jesuit
Burck made his presence known week in and week out and was one of the first players I chose to put on this list. As the Crusaders’ top target, Burck caught 46 passes for 695 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The last update on Burck was he was getting heavy looks from Ivy League schools like Columbia and Princeton.
Joey Fuda, Katy
Fuda was one of many talented wide receivers on the state champion Tiger squad, but in my opinion Fuda stood out amongst the rest. He had soft hands and rarely did he drop a ball. He ended with 27 catches for 616 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Fuda’s college plans regarding football are unclear.
Kevin Miller, Pearland
It’s no secret that Pearland is known for producing some of the state’s top running backs, but Miller is one who caught my attention this past season. He was the Oilers’ main target in the passing game. He finished the year with 42 receptions for 588 yards and four touchdowns.
He is only a junior and should be a solid recruit from the 2009 class.
Close Calls: Blake Shaw, Cypress Falls; B.J. Griffin, Stratford; Darius Bolden, Cypress Falls
