Eisenhower handles Westside 47-29
During last summer and off season, the Eisenhower (8-3) football team decided one of their goals would be to make the playoffs.
One week into the postseason, they're already exceeding their expectations.
Not only did they make the playoffs, the Eagles are also the bi-district champions after a 47-29 win over Westside (5-6) at Galena Park on Saturday night.
“We talked all summer about making the playoffs,” Eisenhower quarterback Kenneth Guiton said. “But once we made it, we didn’t want to be satisfied with just that.”
Guiton and running back Curtis McGregor led the way with more than 300 yards combined. But it was Westside that struck first. Wolves quarterback Michael Goodnight went on a passing attack spreading the ball around to multiple receivers. Running back Frank Williams found the end zone from 26 yards out.
Then it was Eisenhower’s turn. After a 42-yard return from Craig Loston, Guiton scored on a 3-yard run.
Then both teams exchanged turnovers. First, it was Westside’s Albert Fonteno with an interception. On the next play, it was Eisenhower’s Christopher Dennis with an interception that was returned 50 yards to the Westside 15-yard line. Two plays later, Guiton would score from 8 yards out.
After halftime, Eisenhower went back to the ground game. It was all Guiton on the ground until McGregor broke through the defense to score on a 20-yard run.
“I practiced hard all week,” McGregor said. “I told my line if they give me three seconds, I’d make it happen.”
And that he did, but not until the Wolves put together another scoring drive. Michael Goodnight wasted no time finding Mike Smith in the end zone from 38 yards out. Then McGregor got the ball once again when he scored on a 39-yard touchdown run.
Two plays after Dennis pulled down his second interception, Guiton scored from 17 yards. Westside went back to its passing game and Michael Goodnight connected with Kevin Brooks and Smith. The drive was capped off when Michael Goodnight hit Brandon Marbley for a 14-yard touchdown strike.
On Eisenhower’s next drive, McGregor’s 37-yard run set up a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gregory Timmons from Guiton. There was not much more production offensively for the remainder of the game. McGregor would score on a 4-yard touchdown and Michael Goodnight-to-Brooks 33-yard touchdown pass ended the game’s scoring.
“This is a great bunch of kids,” Eisenhower coach Darryl Phipps said. “They answered the bell when we asked them to and they are very coachable.”
Next week’s area match up will feature two district champion teams when Cy Ridge (17) and Eisenhower (19) face off next Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Berry Center.
