As the games got bigger, Taylor Wall got better. That was the story of his senior season.
The Westside lefthander, who has signed to play at Rice, went 14-1 with an 0.64 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings. In the playoffs, he was nearly flawless, going 5-0 with a 0.38 ERA and 49 strikeouts. In 36 postseason innings across five outings, the Chronicle's All-Greater
Houston Pitcher of the Year allowed only four runs (two earned) and 11 hits while posting three shutouts - including a no-hitter against Baytown Sterling in the regional semifinals. His efforts helped the Wolves to their best season in school history - a 30-5 record and a trip to the Class 5A Region III finals, where they fell to Bellaire.
Q: What is the most memorable moment in your high school career?
A: Making it to the regional finals for the first time in school history and going 5-0 in the playoffs. The past three years, we never made it that far. To be a senior and go out like that was pretty special.
Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your success and why?
A: My parents (J.N. and Carrie) and Mark Machalec. He taught me how to
pitch - he's a pitching instructor at Texas Baseball Academy. I started working with him when I was around 13.
Q: How have your accomplishments changed your life?
A: It helped me get a college scholarship. You have something special when you play baseball and not everybody can do that.
Q: What did it mean to you to reach the Region III-5A finals?
A: It means a lot. As seniors, we wanted to be the first class to go farther than any other class at Westside. We accomplished that and went to the regional finals and that topped it off. Even though we came within a game of the state tournament and lost, it was still fun.
Q: What are your plans after high school?
A: Go to Rice, get my degree and hopefully go to a College World Series. I hope I get drafted and play Major League Baseball. If that doesn't work out, hopefully I'll be in a business and making some money.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Probably still playing baseball.
Q: Give me three words that describe yourself.
A: Competitive. Humble. Leader.
Q: You wish you were better at...
A: Golf. All my relatives play it and it's fun to play, but I just don't have the time to practice. Hopefully, I'll get better at it.
Q: Magazine cover you'd like to grace:
A: Sports Illustrated.
Q: If you weren't a baseball player, what other sport would you play?
A: I'd probably play football. I'd be either a quarterback or receiver.
Q: What are your pre-game superstitions?
A: I wear the same shirt and jeans and shoes on every game day. I listen to the same CD, I sit on the same seat on the bus, and I eat the same meal before the game.
Q:Your most SportsCenter-worthy highlight was...
A: In my freshman year, we beat Bellaire in a tiebreaker for the district title and we beat Lamar right after that and I had 15 strikeouts.
Q: Your biggest sports role model is...
A: Brett Favre or Peyton Manning. They're extremely competitive and don't like to lose. Peyton's a perfectionist, and I like to think of myself as a perfectionist. I don't like to lose, and I like to do things the right way.
Q: What's your theme song?
A: Probably "My Dougie"
(by Lil' Wil). (Note: Wall's real first name is Douglas and his nickname is Dougie)
Q: What is something most people don't know about you?
A: I can sing karaoke. I'm not good, though.
Q: What is the most embarrassing sports moment you've had?
A: When I was in little league, I was having a bad day and I hit a ground ball to shortstop and they threw me out and I kept running down the foul line and everyone was staring at me. It's funny now but at the time it was pretty embarrassing. I guess I was just mad, so I kept on running.
Q: If you won a million dollars, you would...
A: I'd probably buy my parents a house and save the rest. I wouldn't know what to do with it.
ALL-GREATER HOUSTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Name: Brett Marshall
School: Baytown Sterling
Position: Pitcher/Outfielder
Class: Senior
Brett Marshall went through quite the transformation from his junior to senior seasons. In one offseason, he went from a solid prospect to a projected early-round Major League Baseball draft pick, all because of a radar gun.
As a junior, the Baytown Sterling righthander consistently threw his fastball in the high 86-88 mph range but could top out in the low 90s. However, after an offseason of hard work and strength training, he was suddenly pushing the radar gun consistently into the mid 90s. Earlier this month, the New York Yankees made him a sixth-round draft pick.
This season, for the Rangers, Marshall did it all. By the middle of the postseason, he was their best pitcher, throwing four complete games in the playoffs and striking out 40 batters. For the season, he was 10-2 with a 2.27 ERA and 116 strikeouts. As the Rangers' cleanup hitter, Marshall, the Chronicle's All-Greater Houston Player of the Year, hit .440 with 10 homers and 49 RBIs, posting an impressive 1.407 on-base-plus-slugging percentage to help Baytown Sterling reach the Class 5A Region III-semifinals, where it lost to Westside.
Q: What is the most memorable moment of your high school career?
A: Our very last playoff game when we lost to Westside (in the Region III-5A semifinals). It was my last game on the mound. That was probably the most people that stadium (Ronnie Kluch Field) has ever had. I was tired. I threw 146 pitches and was still throwing hard at the end - I didn't want to give up. I was pretty much the only pitcher we had and I just had to finish. What kept me going was the fan support. I wanted that game so bad. When I hit that batter that scored the winning run (for Westside), I was about dead and I had no energy left.
Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your success and why?
A: My parents (Eddie and Elaine) and my brother (Chris Bird). They've pushed me through everything. My brother is in Korea in the army. He has been there since last summer. He has missed everything since then and it's killing him.
Q: How have your accomplishments changed your life?
A: Once this year started and I started throwing how I did, it was a whole new world. Getting calls from colleges and seeing all those scouts - it was amazing and one of the best feelings. It was a great experience.
Q: You experienced a dramatic increase in pitch velocity from 2007 to 2008. How did you do it and what was that like?
A: Last year, in our last playoff game against Deer Park, I hit 93 mph but I wasn't doing it consistently. This year I worked my butt off during the summer and fall ball. Our shortstop, Derek Brooks, and I had a daily routine - weight room, hit the field, throw long toss and we had a throwing routine - that was probably the biggest key that helped me get through the year.
This year, our first scrimmage against Pearland was when everything started. There were 12 or 13 scouts who came to see Hunter (Cervenka), but I threw before Hunter. My first pitches were 94, 95 and 96. I didn't know until after the game is over and my dad showed me and I couldn't believe it. The scouts started getting on their cell phones and word spread. I topped out at 97 and could throw 93 consistently.
Q: What did it mean to you to get drafted by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the baseball draft?
A: It meant a lot. I didn't know who I was going to be drafted by. They were calling me and I knew they were interested. Ever since I was 7 years old I told everyone I talked to that I'd play for the New York Yankees one day. It just shows that you can never give up on your dream.
Q: What are your plans after high school?
A: I'm not sure yet. I might not sign (with the Yankees). If I don't sign, I'm going to Rice to play for three years. It's either Rice or the New York Yankees.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: On a big league mound.
Q: Give me three words that describe yourself.
A: Outgoing. Perfectionist. Perseverant.
Q: You wish you were better at...
A: Singing. I can't sing. I wish I had a good voice.
Q:Nobody knows how much you...
A: Love the game of baseball.
Q: What magazine cover would you like to grace?
A: Sports Illustrated.
Q: If you weren't a baseball player, what other sport would you play?
A: Football. I'd be a quarterback.
Q:What are your pre-game superstitions?
A: My stretching routine - it lasts about 20 minutes. I've done that since I started pitching.
Q: Your most SportsCenter-worthy highlight was...
A: Dove and laid out to catch a short pop up on a bunt and turned it into a double play. It was in our last playoff game against Westside.
Q: Your biggest sports role model is...
A: Derek Jeter. Whenever I was a big Yankee fan I used to read about him and he's one of the reasons I never gave up. When he was a kid he said he'd play shortstop for the New York Yankees. He's another guy who never gave up on his dream.
Q:What's your theme song?
A: The Mortal Kombat theme song.
Q: If you won a million dollars, you would...
A: Buy a new car and invest the rest.
